Make these Cute Rainbow Paint Poured Wood Key chains

Have you tried paint pouring yet? Besides being super trendy right now, it’s also so much fun and really so simple! My friends over at DecoArt recently released this great new product called “Pouring Medium” to use with paint pour projects so I want to share this awesome, quick little craft you can do in less than 15 minutes (excluding drying time of course). These rainbow paint poured keychains are cute, trendy, easy to make, and take almost no time to complete! I’m joining a group of other bloggers in a Craft Lightning Session this week. Supplies for making Rainbow Paint Poured Wood Key Chains:

DecoArt Pouring Medium
DecoArt Americana Acrylic Craft Paint (at least 3 colors)
Small wood shapes (like these here)
Key Rings with jump rings
Plastic Cups and Stirring spoons
Drill with 1/8 drill bit

Step one:

Pour some Acrylic craft paint into a disposable plastic cup. How much you use will depend on the size of the object you are planning to cover. A larger canvas will need more paint. For these small wood shapes, I used about a tablespoon of each paint color.

Add the pouring medium to the paint in the cup. The ratio should be about 1 part paint to 1 part pouring medium. It doesn’t need to be exact. You want the paint to be thin, but not water thin.

Repeat with each color you plan to use in a separate cup for each color. Paint pouring should use at least 3 colors to get the best effects. You can use 3 different shades of 1 color or a bunch of rainbow colors like I used!

Step two:

Pour each premixed color into one cup. I used the cup I mixed my white paint in and added all my other colors to it. Don’t stir it, just pour the paints in on top of each other.

Step three:

Place your wood shapes onto a raised surface. I used some wire mesh over a disposable foil pan to sit my shapes on. After your shapes are elevated, pour the paint over them! There is no right way or wrong way to do this. Just pour!

Step four:

Tilt your pieces around side to side if you want to mix the paint further. I picked up the whole tray and tilted it a little bit to help the paint spread. Use a lighter, small or small butane torch. Lightly run it above the wet paint to help the paint cells separate and define.

Allow the wood pieces to dry completely. Poured paint goes on rather thick, so this could take a few hours. It’s perfectly fine to walk away and forget about them for awhile. You can come back and paint the backs a solid color after the front is dry, leave them blank wood, or pour again on the back!

Step five:

Drill a small hole in each wood piece, towards the edge of the wood.

Step six:

Insert a small jump ring through the hole, and attach the key ring. Pinch it closed.

You can attach them to your keyrings, backpack zipper, or anywhere for a fun pop of color! Because paint pouring is so easily customizable the possibilities are endless! Use your favorite colors. Pour on small wood key chains, or on a giant wall canvas!
