Wood burned cutting board *Video*
One of my very favorite craft tools is my wood burner (which is not any huge secret). I love to wood burn. It’s also called “pyrography.” One of my favorite ways to use the wood burner is to make functional art. Art you can use every day! Did you know you can personalize a simple, inexpensive bamboo cutting board yourself? And it’s so easy! I made a short video to show you my wood burned cutting board.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own wood burned cutting board:
- Bamboo (or other wood) cutting board
- Wood burner (My Creative Versa-Tool® is my favorite one)
- Food safe mineral oil
Draw your design on the cutting board with a pencil. It could be anything you want. You could write your last name, or doodle some flowers, flourishes or anything you like! I put one large flower in the corner of my cutting board and filled the spaces with random patterns.
Use your wood burning tool to trace the pencil design onto the wood. Use slow and even pressure, with whichever tip is most comfortable to use. My favorite wood burning tip is the “flow point” tip. I like how it glides over the wood smoothly.
Wash the cutting board with mild soap and water to remove any pencil marks that did not get burned away.
Condition your wood cutting board with a food safe mineral oil. Let the oil sit and soak for at least 4 hours before use. You don’t need to wash it off before use.
Enjoy your one of a kind personalized wood burned cutting board!
Here is the short video I made to show you how I did it. Check it out and be sure to share with your friends.
You can make a set of wood burned kitchen utensils to match. Check out how easy those are too!
