Valentines Heart Sun Catcher Garland
Do you remember using crayons and wax paper when you were young to make sun catchers? You’d put the broken crayons between the wax paper and iron it. I loved making those! This year in my effort to make a few more valentine decorations I decided to try it a different way. I used my laminator instead of the wax paper and iron, and I love how it came out! I learned a few things doing it this way, and I’d love to share.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Valentines Heart Sun Catcher Garland:
- Laminator (One of my very favorite craft tools!)
- Thermal laminating pouch
- crayon shavings
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Marker
First thing I did is to grate my crayons. Yep, with a kitchen grater. You can get one to use specifically for crafting at the dollar store, and then you won’t need to worry about eating wax next time you grate some nice cheddar!
You don’t need very much crayon for this project. I used purple, red and pink, and I only needed a small pinch of each color.
Open your thermal laminating sheets, and sprinkle a few crayon shavings inside. This is one of the things I learned in this project. Please learn from my mistake, don’t make the same one! You don’t need a lot of shavings, and be sure to keep them away from the edge of the pouch! A little crayon goes a very long way. I had some ooze out of the side of my laminating pouch on the first round through and I had to disassemble and clean melted wax out of my laminator. If your crayon does leak a little, run an empty pouch through a few times to clean out the melted wax.

Note the very small amount of crayon shavings used.
Just a few shavings melts so great! Isn’t it amazing how just a few tiny crayon crumbs comes out so perfect?
I love that the pouch seals it completely, it’s durable, perfectly clear, and looks awesome! Once I had melted crayon in three sheets, I cut out my heart shapes.
Use the hole punch to add a hole to each side of the heart and tie them together with ribbon.
I alternated between big hearts and smaller hearts. Some of the pages have more purple, and others more red and pink. It was a nice fun mix! My ribbon pieces were about 6 inches long, and I just tied them in a knot.
Hang in a window or on a mirror for some beautiful and easy Valentine’s Day love. Have you ever made wax paper crayon sun catchers?
