I found the cutest little unfinished wood hearts at the Dollar Tree last week. I picked a few up, not knowing what I would do with them, or even if I would have time to do anything with them at all! I recently went back to school full time, on top of my full-time job and my “free time” is super limited these days. That doesn’t leave very much time to craft, sadly. I was optimistic though and brought them home with me anyway. It never hurts to hope, right?
I was extra delighted when I realized that my January Club Couture transfer from Chalk Couture fit the wood heart almost exactly! This sweet little Valentine’s heart transfer was so perfect! And since I needed a project that wouldn’t take much time, Chalk Couture was the perfect solution!
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Wood Heart Surface (I got mine at Dollar Tree. Here’s a similar one)
- Chalk Couture Transfer
- Chalk Paste
- Squeegee
- Distilled Water
- Fuzzing Cloth
- Ribbon and Flower embellishments
- Hot Glue

Step one:
Prepare your Chalk Paste. You can add a small amount of distilled water if the paste is too thick. You want it to be smooth but not runny.

Step two:
Peel your Transfer off the backing sheet and lightly press the sticky side down on a Fuzzing Cloth to prepare the adhesive. Repeat this once or twice to make sure your transfer is not so sticky that it will get stuck on your surface.

Step three:
Line your transfer up over your surface, and press down. Rub it to smooth out any bubbles. The transfer is repositionable so don’t worry about getting it just right on the first go. It’s ok to peel it back up and reposition.

Step four:
Use your squeegee to pick up some chalk paste, and spread it thinly over the transfer design.

Use as few or as many colors as you want. You can blend with your squeegee or with your fingers. Work quickly, however, because the chalk paste dries fast.

Step five:
While the chalk paste is still wet, peel the transfer gently off of the surface.

Step six:
Clean your transfer in warm water. Some chalk paste colors stain transfers, but it’s ok they are still perfectly fine to reuse. To help avoid staining, I use a magic eraser or a board eraser to wipe the transfer clean.

Lay the transfer sticky side up on a flat surface to air dry. You can speed up the drying with a cool blow dryer if you want to use your transfer again right away.
If properly cared for, transfers can be reused 8-10 times! *Pro tip: If your transfer is feeling less than sticky, wipe the sticky side lightly with a Clorox wipe. The chemicals in the Clorox solution will help to reactivate tired adhesive.
Step Seven:
Add any cute valentines embellishments you’d like. I cut the plain dollar store ribbon off of my heart and added my own Valentine’s ribbon. I also added some red and white flowers to one side. You’re free to add whatever you’d like!

The entire project, from start to finish (including clean up time) only took 10 minutes. Seriously! It’s so amazing!

Even a super busy person like me has 10 minutes! I don’t have very many cute Valentine’s decorations because it’s not my super favorite holiday, so adding one more is always a great idea!
