Dollar Store Crafting: Autumn leaf votive

Fall leaves are very beautiful. My favorite part about this time of year is watching the leaves change. I’ve been waiting for the beautiful Mulberry tree in the back yard to change so I can have a little bit of fun with the leaves. While I was waiting, I decided to give this Autumn leaf votive I’ve seen online a try. I changed a few things from the tutorials I’ve seen. I wanted it smaller, votive size instead of lantern size so I did not use a mason jar. Instead I used a small glass votive jar from the local Dollar Tree. And since I don’t have real leaves to use yet, I purchased a bag of these fake leaves, also from the Dollar Tree. These are the same leaves that were used here on the Fall Personal Progress handouts. They have been great little leaves! Like so many other things, I thought this project would be better with some added sparkle, so I used some fall colored glitter on the leaves, and in the Mod Podge when I covered the votive! I love the results!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your leaf votives:
- Glass candle votive (I bought mine at the dollar store)
- Fall leaves (I used inexpensive fake leaves also from the dollar store)
- Glitter (Red, orange and gold)
- Mod Podge (I like the really glossy kind for this project)
- Paint brush

I put glitter on the leaves in several different ways. My favorites ended up being
the ones where the veins of the leaf were covered in the glitter.

After the glitter had dried, I covered the backs of each leaf in Mod Podge and secured them
to the glass where I wanted them.

Once the leaves have dried in place, Cover the entire votive with Mod Podge. I used
Glossy, I like the shine.

The Mod Podge dries clear, but you can still see the brush strokes giving it a nice effect
with the candle in it!

I love how the light shines through the leaves, and the glitter adds a nice little bit
of sparkle!
