Thanksgiving is this week, and I’m so excited! My parents are visiting from out of town, and we will be having a big Thanksgiving gathering with them, and all of the Hubbys family too. I’m looking forward to it! I know this is super last minute, but I wanted a fall welcome mat to go on the doorstep, and all of the stores only have Christmas holiday items out now. I do love Christmas, and while I’m already preparing for it, I still want to enjoy fall, and Thanksgiving too! Thankfully this projects falls under the category of “You can paint literally anything!” You just need a door mat from your local Dollar Store!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Dollar Store Hello Welcome Mat:
- Blank door mat (I found mine at the Dollar Tree)
- Acrylic Craft Paint in several colors (I used Decoart Paints in Orange, Red, Yellow, White, and Copper)
- Paint Brush
- Chalk (optional)
Decide your layout. I used a piece of chalk to write the word “Hello” on my mat. If you don’t like how it looks, wipe it down with a wet rag and try again!
Outline your “Hello” with acrylic craft paint. I used multiple colors across the word, making each letter it’s own color and blending them together.
Use a large paintbrush, or a sponge pouncer brush to fill in the rug with daubs of fall colored paint.
Fill the rug in completely, covering as much space as you are able. After I had mostly filled the rug in, I added some Copper paint daubs for a little bit of shine.
Use the white paint to outline your letters so they stand out on the colorful rug
You can use these methods to customize the rug with any wording or colors! If you’re done with your Autumn decorating completely and you’d rather have a winter rug, just change the fall colors to Christmas colors, or use shades of blue, white and silver for a winter rug. The options are endless!
