The Bright Green Bed
Last year we found one of those old french provincial bedroom sets at a yardsale. The set had a twin size bed, a corner vanity, and a desk. They were asking a fraction of what we would have expected to pay, so we took it home with us! For more than a year now it’s been sitting in the garage collecting dust. The plan was to put it in the toddlers room when she was ready for her big girl stuff. I finally decided it was time. The set was dragged out of the garage. The outdated cream and gold paint was chipped, faded and old. It needed a fresh start. The bed was first up on the list. I decided that a bright green bed would be exactly what the room needed.

I had more than a few raised eyebrows when I told people I was going to paint my daughters bed bright green. I am generally a very quiet, and reserved person until you really get to know me. “Shy” doesn’t even really cover it. I have spent most of my introverted life worrying about what someone else might think of me. For years, my decorating has matched that shy personality. I never did anything unexpected or daring. White paint. Wood tones. Boring. One of my favorite things this blog has done for me is to lighten me up a little. It’s taught me to relax, and helped me to explore my personal style, and find out what I really love. I’m finding, more every day, that I love bright things, bright colors. And every day, I’m getting braver in how I add those bright colors to my life.
It started when I took this dog bed, which I didn’t have the guts to really finish first, and painted it bright turquoise. That bright turquoise dog bed won the second place prize in a contest, and in turn, boosted my confidence levels to where they needed to be to finally feel comfortable adding more color to my life.
So today, celebrating the second anniversary of the Craft Shack, I’m going to share with you my happy bright green bed! My friends over at DecoArt sent me the beautiful paint, wax, and metallic lustre I needed to bring this vision in my head to life.
I started as usual by cleaning up the bed. Sanding away any rough spots, and giving it a good washing. I chose to use chalk paint for this project because I was painting over an older finish and I didn’t want to prime first. Lazy, but so effective!
The Bright green color I picked is called “Fortune” and it’s a DecoArt Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint. It is the prettiest bright green color!
With a little bit of water to thin it out some, it works perfectly in my Finish Max paint sprayer. I really love that sprayer! A favorite DIY tool for sure! Because I watered the paint down some for ease of use in the sprayer, it needed two coats. But look how great that first coat looks?
After the bed was sufficiently green, I used a clear creme wax to seal it. I love that the bright green bed matches my garden.
I wanted to add a little bit of unique style to the bed, a little something more. There are these little pots of finish wax that Decoart makes called Metallic Lustres. I love these shiny little waxes so much! I took the beautiful “Elegant Emerald” color and brushed it over the finials, and some of the details on the bed. Don’t they just shine so pretty now?
We assembled the bed in my sweet toddlers room, where she immediately demonstrated her approval by refusing to leave it!
The bright pink bedspread makes the green pop even more! And of course we couldn’t leave out the adorable owls. I made the mobile above her bed when she was just a baby.
Every time I see the bright green bed, it makes me smile. My adorable daughter feels the same way about it, which makes me smile more.
It’s the little things like this that add bits of happy light to my life. So when someone raises their eyebrows and asks “A green bed?” I just smile and say “Why not?”
Thank you so much for allowing me to share my happy with you for two years now. Here’s to many more happy years and Craft Shack adventures!
